Feathering My Nest

Lately, I’ve had the unrelenting urge to feather our nest.  To spruce our place up a bit and make it more homey.

Now that we have lived in our humble apartment for almost two and a half years I’m tired of always saying

“I’ll decorate when we move to another place, we’ll only be here temporarily…”

Well, after two and a half years I can’t really take it anymore!  I don’t care if we end up leaving in two months (we’re not planning on it just so you know), I’m putting my foot down and pushing my sleeves up.  Just before Christmas Tyler helped me get started with a project that I had been daydreaming about for months – valances.

Our windows, although they came with the standard apartment blinds, have had absolutely no coverings what-so-ever and that needed to change.

I finished the one that goes over our sliding glass doors to our balcony, and would still like to make another that matches for the window in our kitchen area.  Not to mention getting some sort of drapes for both our bedroom and Marie’s room.

Another thing that I’ve been dreaming about is a headboard for our bed.  Nothing says b-o-r-i-n-g in a bedroom more than a mattress pushed up against a wall (in my opinion anyway) and that’s what we’ve had for our entire marriage. 

I feel like, because nobody ever sees our bedroom aside from ourselves, it ends up being the place to throw things that don’t have a specific place.  So guests don’t see our clutter.  Translation: our bedroom at times looks like a dumping grounds. Uh, not really what I want to look at every night before going to bed.

So, I’m on a mission to pretty it up starting with the bed.  To be more specific, I want to make this upholstered headboard from Pottery Barn.

Pottery Barn’s price tag of $1,000 doesn’t quite fit within our budget, but I’ve been reading up on others who excel at the DIY thing and have read all their tips. As long as I can convince Tyler to be my trusty sidekick, I’m willing to give it a try too.

I’ll admit that I’m a little nervous about tackling the headboard project, but I don’t want my fears to get in the way of what I’d like our bedroom to be.  I’m hoping that by actually sharing with you all about my goals, I may actually be motivated to get them done.  Wish me luck!
